When New Jersey paper The Asbury Park Press reported about a drug bust in Ocean County, N.J., they did so by focusing their headline and lede on someone who wasn’t involved in the story.

Following a three-month police investigation, Jason Groome, Anthony Brandt and Daniel Wunder were arrested and charged with distributing cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and firearms.

Groome is the father of Jason”Jay” Groome, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox who is from Barnegat, N.J. Groome was not arrested, nor is he involved in any of these crimes. His status as an MLB prospect is nothing more than a footnote to this story, but The Asbury Park Press decided it was worthwhile to shift bad press onto a 19-year-old kid who isn’t even the focus of this story. The newspaper confirmed this within the story:

This investigation has not produced any evidence to suggest that any other member of the Groome family, besides the arrestee, Jason Groome, was involved in the alleged criminal activity, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office.

There was only one reason to rake the coals over the younger Groome and it was to drive traffic to the website. It’s less likely that the story would be read until you include the sports angle in it. Luckily, subscribers weren’t fooled:

We have reached out to Katie Park, the author of the story, and will update when we receive a reply.
